Internet BasicsWouldn't it be nice to have a library at your finger tips? The internet provides access to many forms of information and research at the click of a button. You and your child can access the internet from your local library, school, or home. However, to do so requires an ISP or Internet Service Provider. Common forms of ISPs use phone lines, cable, and even satellites to relay information. Once you have gained access to an ISP, show your child how to use the browser to open a specific webpage, and then explain how the browser can be used to help them understand the webpage even better. Special web pages called search engines are the backbone of your internet library. As you and your child type in a certain subject or keyword, you gain a variety of information quickly and easily. Electronic mail or email enables children and parents to communicate with family members and friends. Because the person receiving the email can respond quickly, children often get excited about writing letters. Get ready for a wonderful journey into science, history, and untold wonders as you and your child enjoy the internet and all its possibilities.
