The Booksmith Group, Nashville Public Television, and Everton Oglesby Architects have joined forces to produce a pictorial history of some of the Nashville area’s houses of worship. Designed for Worship: An Architectural Perspective of Sacred Places in Middle Tennessee will be launched with a publication party hosted by Everton Oglesby Architects (400 Fourth Avenue South) on Thursday, November 16 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Designed for Worship, the television documentary that inspired the book, airs Tuesday, November 28 at 7:00 p.m. on NPT.
The architecture of sacred spaces reveals a rich and varied story about individual views of mankind’s place in the universe. Whether quiet and rough-hewn, or spectacularly ornate, these buildings provide inspirational spaces where matters beyond one’s daily existence are brought to the forefront of consciousness. In the face of change, many expressions of sacred architecture across Middle Tennessee have been lost or renovated for other purposes, while other structures have been preserved and continue to play important roles in the community.
Designed for Worship documents some of the spaces that have been lost as well as the structures that are beloved and integral parts of today’s faith communities. This art-quality gift book features more than 200 photographs of more than 60 houses of worship in Middle Tennessee.
Designed for Worship: An Architectural Perspective of Sacred Places in Middle Tennessee was designed, edited, and published by The BookSmith Group, a division of Favorite Recipes Press, in cooperation with Nashville Public Television and Everton Oglesby Architects.
